Research questions to be addressed by this study were as follows:

  1. What are the health-related characteristics of each county in the Northern Border Region (ME, NH, NY, and VT), and which counties are ranked lowest in these characteristics?
  2. What are the health-related characteristics of each state within the Northern Border Region, and which states contain counties ranked lowest in these characteristics?

This project compiled the most recent publicly available data at the county-level and state-level for ME, NH, NY, and VT. State chartbooks included figures and tables on demographic characteristics, socioeconomic characteristics, access to healthcare, health outcomes, health behaviors, community safety and physical environment, mortality rates, Health Professional Shortage Areas, Rural Health Clinic locations, Federally Qualified Health Center locations, hospital locations, internet access, and substance use treatment locations. We highlighted the counties categorized as distressed or transitional, and distinguish between rural and urban counties. The region chartbook provided state-aggregated data on the same topics, and additional information on telehealth policies and grants, scope of practice for healthcare practitioners, and health insurance coverage.
