Description

This research letter provides the first empirical look at whether the Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation is helping financially distressed rural hospitals avoid closure. Using national data from 2023–2025, the authors compare hospitals that closed, converted to REH status, or remained open, finding that REH converters closely resembled hospitals that ultimately closed—both had low baseline margins and elevated financial distress. Although early, the findings suggest the REH model may offer a lifeline for struggling facilities, but continued monitoring is needed as more hospitals convert.
