Health Care Professional Workforce Composition Before and After Rural Hospital Closure

The impact of the closure of a hospital in a rural community can be particularly severe. In addition to the loss of inpatient services, hospital closure also frequently triggers the loss of other community healthcare resources, including healthcare providers. National Provider Identifier data was used to examine changes in the local healthcare workforce prior to, and following, the closure of hospitals in 85 rural communities between 2010 and 2019.
