This project will investigate how and where rural youth in Maine are physically active, and will help to define the built and natural environmental factors that support and limit physical activity of youth in rural communities. We will assess whether current theories that model the determinants of physical activity are appropriate for rural communities and rural residents.

Breast, Cervical, Colorectal, and Prostate Cancer Screening in Rural America: Does Proximity to a Metropolitan Area Matter?

Implementing Clinical Preventive Services Recommendations in Rural Settings

As part of a larger effort to evaluate the integration and delivery of the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations in different types of health plans through site visits and key informant interviews, Walsh Center staff conducted one site visit with a rural health plan to identify specific barriers and opportunities inherent to providing clinical preventive services to rural residents in rural settings.

Role of English Proficiency and Area of Residence in the Use of Adult Preventive Health Services Among Latino Subgroups

Rural Healthy People 2010: A Companion Document for Rural Areas

This project identified and examined approximately one dozen high priority objectives for rural health as a subset of the hundreds of objectives defined within Healthy People 2010 including, Access to Quality Health Services (Insurance, Primary Care, and EMS); Cancer; Diabetes; Heart Disease and Stroke; Maternal, Infant, and Child Health; Mental Health and Mental Disorders; Nutrition and Overweight Concerns; Oral Health; Substance Abuse; and Tobacco Use.

Research and practice literatures associated with each of the selected objectives were investigated by the project research teams and summarized along with associated models for practice. Rural Healthy People 2010: Expansion Project
