This study will develop a methodology to measure the patient characteristics, practice volume and economic value of health care services provided to underserved rural communities and minorities by National Health Service Corps (NHSC) alumni. The methodology is to be developed and documented for a single state (South Carolina) for future application to other state and national studies. While all NHSC alumni (MD, DO, DDS, NP, PA, CNM) currently practicing in South Carolina will be identified, analysis of practice patterns will be limited to physicians. Physicians will be profiled by age, sex, race, specialty and practice location, then compared to their peers. We will analyze the contributions NHSC alumni physicians make to providing care for geographically, financially or racially vulnerable populations, the total volume of services provided, and the economic contribution of these services. This inventory will include hospital services by all payers and all services provided to Medicaid recipients in 1998.
