Breast Cancer Study
This study will determine whether the course of breast-conserving therapy with radiation in treating breast cancer in elderly women in western Washington state is due to poor access to radiation oncology services or the training and practice style of surgeons caring for these women. Study populations include women registered in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program database with an initial diagnosis of stage I or II breast cancer in 1994 or 1995. A database linking information from the SEER program, Medicare Part B claims, the AMA Masterfile, and the American Board of Medical Specialties was created. Study findings will guide the development of interventions to increase availability of breast-conserving therapy with radiation, especially in rural areas.
